Silver Bust of Saint Peter
Silver Bust of Saint Peter, 1473,
silver, gilded, enamel, gems and glass stones
MSA Dep. KKPA 10/2009
This relic bust of St Peter is especially life-like and is one of the earliest authenticated silversmith works of its kind in Germany. According to the bust’s engraving this unusual object was made in 1473 by the master craftsman Hans Dirmstein from Frankfurt am Main.
Commissioned especially for the Chapter St Peter and Alexander the bust was made to compliment an already existing bust of St Alexander that dated from two generations earlier. The busts of the two patron saints were used during ceremonial presentations at the altar.
