Oil painting Saint Peter
Oil painting Saint Peter,
unknown panel painter, Franconia, c. 1480,
oil on fir wood, gold base
MSA 11970
The small panel painting depicts St Peter as an apostle, holding his attribute, the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. The saint’s name “Peter” derives from “petra” the Greek word for rock, the foundation on which Jesus wants to build his Church. St Peter is also the patron saint of the Aschaffenburg Stiftskirche and the panel is believed to have once been located at the Stiftskirche.
