Stained-glass painting of Saint Martin
Stained-glass painting of Saint Martin, unknown stained-glass artist
Middle Rhine, c. 1470/80, grisaille, silver-yellow, black paint on blue and green glass, lead
MSA 67/1951
St Martin is the patron saint of the diocese Mainz and the town Aschaffenburg. His charity and humility stand exemplary for knightly virtue and Christian goodness.
The stained glass painting is from the town hall in Klingenberg and was made using a technique known as ‘grisaille’, which involves applying black paint of various consistencies. Martin is shown wearing the typical late medieval dress of a young noble man and the outlines of the composition are skilfully drawn by the artist in lead.
